01. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?

Many, many things.
Ate pizza with apricots and chickpeas on it, rabbit aspic, grapes fresh off the vine, and frozen escargot (not all in the same meal).
Designed a box for professional lawn equipment that will be in stores across America. Yep, I'm finally going to get something in stores across America...but it's not a comic, it's lawn equipment.
Walked across Belgium.
Sat in the same building as my brother for five days without arguing with him.
Flew an airplane for an extended period of time.
Ran my own table at San Diego Comic Con and did quite nicely at it.
Organized a really good soccer game.
Saw a castle. Saw the full moon rise on the equinox from a castle, as a matter of fact.
Learned about beekeeping.
Painted a portrait in acrylics.
Visited the Louvre.
Returned to college.
Went an entire Rainbow Gathering without smoking pot.

02. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

You know, for once I actually did. And I didn't make any new ones, because I'm pretty happy about the way things are going right now. I'm going to pick one thing and learn to draw it really, really well this year. I'm trying to decide between "sea animals," "rocks," or "elbows." Honestly, I could spend a year on necks and elbows and knees. Oh, and ankles. But instead I'm writing this blog entry.

03. Did someone close to you give birth?

A friend who lives in Turkey, which is not that close I guess. Other than that can't think of anyone, but a lot of good friends got pregnant so I guess that's gonna happen next year.

04. Did anyone close to you die?

Robbie Walker, a dear friend from Austin and Arcata.

05. What countries did you visit?

Denmark, Germany, France, and Belgium.

06. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?

Can't think of much. A year without dental problems would be nice. National publication for vast sums of renumeration would be nice.

07. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

It's amazing how much I'd forgotten. This year was just busy. I forgot that I'd gone to college, or dated an acupuncturist, or had dental surgery. There was so much other stuff going on!

08. What was your biggest achievement(s) of the year?

There were a lot, but SDCC and product design and travelling across France are probably the best. I hit some pretty crazy artistic heights this year too -- there are five or six things I drew that are among the best things I ever drew.

09. What was your biggest failure(s)?

Not getting a table for SDCC 2011. There were also some karaoke-related injuries, and I totally did not succeed in starting a band or playing much music at all. But I'll keep trying.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Horrible dental problems in March. A bad cold sore during SDCC, which was great.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

My father's Christmas present, probably. I also bought an awesome lead holder in France.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Honestly, I think Obama did about as well as anyone possibly could. I could ask for a LOT more but I am very aware of the unrealism of expecting it.

Julian Assange, assuming he's not a rapist, has been amazing. Actually his achievements stand by themselves, but it's hard to celebrate a rapist so I have to admit I hope he didn't do it.

4chan has also kicked a lot of ass this year.

Zach made some notable breakthroughs with his comics. Cassie has also seemed to do exceptionally well for herself. The Fiction Circus crew seems to be settin' 'em up and knockin' 'em down. Marshall finally landed his dream job.

My parents have done amazingly well this year, what with dancing lessons and globetrotting and all.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

British Petroleum.

A friend of mine who I used to respect greatly has sort of revealed themselves to be sort of disturbing and disrespecful and violently anti-Arab. That sort of sucked. I'm cool with people being hateful, I just don't hang out with them and it's no big deal. But this guy slipped under my radar and I thought that the good things he had done once in some way made up for the rather evil place where he is now. I don't think that any more.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Food. Rent. Dental surgery. Legal expenses. Plane tickets.

Once again, I went an entire year without making any major purchases or spending a dime on luxuries. I actually spent more on Christmas presents this year than I spent on myself, and I did NOT spend all that much on Xmas. Here's everything that I can remember buying for myself this year:

two lead holders and a sharpener
about ten tubes of acrylic paint
a $40 guitar and $8 on new strings
a couple comic books

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

The first castle that I ever saw, in Chateau-Thierry.

Going back to college was really exciting for a minute.

16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2010?

Any of the pop hits of this summer will bring me back, especially "Dynamite" and "No Parle Americano" and "Kids" and that Eminem/Rihanna song.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
I. happier or sadder?

Ha, I about am the same level of deleriously happy, maybe even a little more so.

II. thinner or fatter?

'bout the same. Got real thin for a minute there, but then the holidays happened.

III. richer or poorer?

A bit richer, though with less certain income now.

IV. older or wiser?

ummm...both?

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

dancing and being goofy and having fun. Going to parties and going out with my friends.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

eating sugar and energy drinks. Walking.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

With my parents and my best friend and her family.

21. Did you fall in love in 2010?

I met someone I like a lot and I'm curious to see where it goes. I had an interesting relationship early in the year that was not exactly a "good" relationship but I think it taught me a lot and made me feel pretty good sometimes.

22. How many one-night stands?

None.

23. What was your favorite TV program?

The only TV that really delighted me this year was watching the A-Team in French (L'Agence tous risques).

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Nope.

25. What was the best book you read?

Maybe the Name of the Rose, or the Good Soldier Svejk? No, wait, it's gotta be Cities of Darkness, Cities of Light.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Somewhere halfway through my first Greyhound transit of America I realized that the Tin Hat Trio's "The Rodeo Eroded" is the greatest album of all time. I also really liked the new Do Make Say Think. Noir Desir is really good.

27. What did you want and get?

Most everything.

28. What did you want and not get?

Career security.

29. Favorite film of this year?

The Thief and the Cobbler. The Testimony of Doctor Mabuse. I also liked the heck out of Inglourious Basterds and Tron 2.0.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 35 at the Rainbow Gathering. I argued with little kids, meditated, and hung out with friends.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Having one of my comics "break through."

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?

Actually this year has been my high-water mark for snappy dressing. Not only did I get dressed up all snazzy for two different weddings, but I've been a lot better about shaving and combing my hair this year. That's right, I made a special effort.

33. What kept you sane?

Joy.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Fay Wray?

35. What political issue stirred you the most?

the BP oil disaster, followed by that weird idiot Rand Paul.

36. Who do you miss?

Lots and lots of folk.

37. Who was the best new person you met?

Probably Gewel, or a tie between Astrid and Cynthia.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.

It's a lot of fun to speak French correctly.

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

It's been an instrumental year
